Training through the winter blues – 1/30/’11.

So, winter is upon us.  The sky is grey and depressing, its freezing cold and the last thing you want to have to do is to put on all those extra layers and go to the gym.  Actually come to think of it, the last thing you want to do is even think about working out!  But wait, it’s the end of January already and Spring is only 7 weeks away!  How am I going to make it through the next month and a half and start getting myself in some sort of shape before the nice weather arrives?

Here’s how.  Find a workout buddy.  Motivation is key  in making it through those dreary winter months when all you want to do is stay inside where it’s warm and cozy.  Having a workout partner helps because you have an obligation and you’re much more likely to show up to meet them.   You can also motivate  and feed off each other’s energy because if you’re working out by yourself it’s easier to skip your training session and before you know it you’re in a rut and it then becomes a daily struggle to even make it to the gym.

If you’re the type that likes to do your own thing but it’s just mentally tough to get to the gym, then try working out at home.  Change your workout routine a bit and maybe run the stairs in your building a few times, or jump rope in the hallway.  You can even do a Floor/Core workout at home, all you need is a  mat or a thick carpet and you can do Abdominals, Push-ups, Planks, Back Extensions, and Stretching.

There’s no doubt that it can be a battle to make it to the gym in the winter time, but if you don’t feel like going to the gym, then bring the gym to you and make it happen.

  1. Alright, you got me, I’ll work out…
