Prevention Is Better Than Cure. 1/4/’10.
For many the New Year signals the turning over of a new leaf with fresh resolutions and renewed fitness goals. A word of caution: Whether you’ve “fallen off the fitness wagon” and are ready to climb back on, or you’re new to the fitness game and have decided it’s time to begin taking better care of yourself, my advice would be to ease into it slowly. After not having done anything for a few months or longer, jumping back into working out or whatever activity or sport you’ve decided to try your hand at with over-enthusiasm, can and many times will lead to injury. It takes a while for the joints and connective tissue, i.e. tendons and ligaments to strengthen. So, go ahead, get to it and enjoy and have fun, just remember to err on the side of caution and don’t overdo it.
Having said that, I should also state that it’s important to get the proper training gear to avoid unneccessary injuries, i.e., the right running shoes and the proper clothing if you’ll be training outdoors in cold temperatures. Remember to warm up properly, especially in cold climates before undertaking any rigorous activity. Most injuries can be avoided if common sense is used, so be smart and whatever activity or exercise you’re about to do, think it through before executing it.
